Facebook. A social networking place. For some a dream come true, for others a true nightmare. Guess in which category phishers, scammers and malware authors reside?
In today's post we will be highlighting a scam specifically focusing on players of the game League of Legends, an action real-time strategy game developed and published by Riot Games.
The scam page on Facebook in question is:
hxxp://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Riot-codes/141669939249958
Currently, it already has over 41,000 likes:
More and more people are liking the page, thus might be getting scammed
On Youtube as well as on Google+ and Twitter it is -for now- pretty calm. Only a few video's and tweets promoting this scam:
On Twitter, Google+ and Youtube they are also promoting their website, but not as heavily as on Facebook
Example websites where you can get "free" riot points or "free" riot codes are

You can +1 it, share it on Facebook, Tweet it ... Share the scam with everyone you like ;-) .
The first link in bold is the one discussed in this blog post. All you have to do to get your Riot Points for free is to follow these 3 easy steps:
Step 1 - Share it on Facebook
Step 2 - Post the following message once on your wall and 5 times on a Different Game Page on Facebook:
WOW! I just got my League of Legends Riot Code for free! So excited! Thanks hxxp://freeriotcodes.com !
Step 3 - Click "Like and Confirm"
Step 2 in the process - posting on Facebook. In this specific scam, it is not being posted automatically to your wall, you actually have to share it yourself
That's it, 3 simple steps and then you'll be able to download your Riot Points or codes free of charge!
... But wait, there's a timer on the page indicating you'll have to wait before the next giveaway:
Somehow, I got lucky and, through one of the other websites, I was able to visit the download page and acquire my points!
However, ultimately I have to complete a survey to finally download my Riot points. I am getting redirected to several other scams and so on. You can win a smartphone, the new iPad, an iPhone, trendy boots, a Macbook ....
In some cases only your phone number is sufficient, in others you'll have to fill in complete information like your full address, email address ...
Some examples of dubious file sharing websites, which are also showing a popup with some Javascript behind it (another survey scam):
hxxp://cleanfiles.net
hxxp://fileharmony.com
hxxp://fileice.net
hxxp://fileme.us
hxxp://fileml.com
hxxp://filenix.com
hxxp://filesquick.net
hxxp://matrixmega.com
hxxp://needforfile.net
hxxp://oceanfiles.me
hxxp://redirectlock.com
hxxp://sharecash.org
hxxp://sharkyfiles.com
hxxp://skippyfile.com
hxxp://speedyfiles.net
hxxp://tinyfileshost.com
hxxp://topfiles.me
hxxp://videlocked.pw
There's also a Pastebin link with all the above scam/phishing sites for League of Legends here: League of Legends scam & phishing URLs
Conclusion
- Pretty straightforward: do not click on any of these scams, how tempting they might be! You will not receive a prize, you will not receive a free iPhone and you will certainly not receive any Riot Points or Riot codes! It's all fake!
- Lastly, never fill in your login credentials on any site other than the official one!
Some tips: - Install WOT - WOT is a community-based tool and is therefore very useful for these kinds of scams, whereas other users can warn you about the validity.
More information and to download WOT: http://www.mywot.com/ - When in doubt, use any of the following URL scanners:
https://www.virustotal.com/#url
http://www.urlvoid.com
http://urlquery.net - Has your account been hacked? Read the tips here to recover it as soon as possible:
http://forums.euw.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1064749 - Some DO's and DO NOT's by Riot themselves:
https://support.leagueoflegends.com/entries/21552105-Protecting-Your-Account - There's no such thing as a "Riot Point Generator" or "Riot Points Injector" either. For that, see my post: League of Legends RP hack
- The most important one of them all:
if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!
whow thanks, didn't know !!
ReplyDeleteSorry but your blog is pointless. You have no proof that it's a scam. I am one of the winners from http://RafflesForPrizes.com and I can say that I received my code.
ReplyDeleteHi Jake,
DeleteThanks for your comment. However, if you have actually read the post, it is obviously a scam.
These 'survey scams' are becoming more and more prevalent. It is sufficient to simply close the page.
Well, I received two codes from two different downloads on two different days and they were both the same code. Plus they didn't work. And with all those unnecessary surveys, there is no way that it can't be a scam.
ReplyDeleteI think you can try this tool instead.. watch the video proof.. http://www.godshack.tk/
DeleteI also got the scam you talked about. At first I was happy to receive free codes, but I quickly realised it's fake and a scam.
ReplyDeletewww.riotcodesfree.com
ReplyDeleteOkay In my previous post I said that It's fake but I just found working site. I got my $10 code for real. I'm gonna try to get more with Proxy/VPN.
Hi,
DeleteUnfortunately, that site is also a scam.
Bart,
ReplyDeleteCan you please write a scam report on Fake Dota 2 beta giveaways. Please try to remove their facebook pages, they are annoying the heck out of people. Please and thank you.
Hi Anonymous,
DeleteLet me see what I can do. Do you have the links to the pages in question ?
Thanks and yes I have the links. Here they are:
Deletehxxp://www.facebook.com/OfficialDota2
hxxp://www.facebook.com/dota2betagiveaway
hxxp://www.facebook.com/FreeDota2BetaKeys
And the list goes on and on. If you just do a search, you will find a lot more. Thank you for your awesome work in keeping scammers out of the gaming community. We all appreciate it.
Hi,
DeleteI can't promise I'll write a seperate blogpost, but I will try my best to have these Facebook scams removed as well.
Thanks for your input and feedback !
Hi,
DeleteI have contacted Valve 2 weeks ago, but no reply as of yet unfortunately.
I will re-contact them today.
Cheers
Ok, Thank you for your help.
DeleteI received a reply today:
Delete"We will investigate this matter and take appropriate action.
Please note that you will not receive a notification about any action taken as a result of this report.
If you have any further difficulty, please let us know."
Let's await their actions and hope the Facebook pages will be deleted.
Regards
Thanks Bart. Your work is very much appreciated. Let's get rid of these scammers!
Deletethnx for your report bartblaze!
ReplyDeleteinformative post, i like it. are there more scams like these ?
ReplyDeleteHi,
Deleteas mentioned in another reply by Anonymous, there is also an active spam/scam campaign for Dota2.
No doubt other members of the gaming community are also being focused.
In essence, all these scams are on and a like. Reading the conclusion and using common sense will protect you sufficiently against these kinds of attacks.
cheers
Hi. I think here's another scam https://www.facebook.com/riotpointsgiveaway
ReplyDeleteThanks, I will check it out !
DeleteConfirmed it's a scam. I will report it and the page(s) will be removed.
DeleteRegards
Here's another scam page.
Deletehttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Riot-codes/363171447059745
Thanks.
Confirmed scam. I'll report it as well.
DeleteCheers !
Thanks bartblaze, your work on this is appreciated. keep it up!
ReplyDeleteWe're really sorry but this code was already taken by another user. This is auto message from our script.
ReplyDeleteWe've generated new code for you. We guarantee that this one isn't already taken and only you can see it. You have only 60 minutes to unlock the new generated code. After 60 minutes we'll remove the link and the link will unavailable for unlock.
We're really sorry, the chances to happen something like this are 1%. You and one more user clicked on the Available code at same second.
We're really sorry. We promise that the code below will work 100%.
Thanks for understanding.
Your code can be unlocked here: http://fileice.net/download.php?file=qdqr
You know already, the surveys are easy and take only few minutes from your time.
If you have paid surveys, complete it and then send to the same number "STOP" to get your credit back.
Your, Free Riot Codes Team!
wow great scam :P
What a coincidence the code was already taken... ;-)
Deletegood post, Sir
ReplyDeleteHey Blaze,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your hard work.
They have a new page:
facebook.com/pages/Free-Riot-codes/363171447059745
I'm not sure if you already mention it since your post is so long.
As a hardcore LOL player, it is much appreciated.
Hi,
DeleteAll above mentioned Facebook pages are taken down, except for the one you post now:
http://facebook.com/pages/Free-Riot-codes/363171447059745
I will report this one once again. You can also help by reporting it as "Spam or scam".
My pleasure in helping the gaming community. Cheers !
Hey,
ReplyDeleteI posted earlier. Do you think you can keep us updated with these kind of sites? I saw you uploaded a document onto pastebin of scammer profile and such.
You don't even have to keep us updated, just keep this scammer (bok1ca) from scamming people will be good enough. I feel stupid after doing all those surveys... I thought everybody is honest on the internet! Hope you can remove the previous fan page I posted earlier. Thanks again!
Thanks for your hard work. I have subscribed! I love your other blog post as well.
Yours truly.
Hi,
DeleteThanks for your kind comments ! Which Anonymous are you exactly ? :)
I will update this post with all the Facebook pages in a few days, in 1 row like I did with the fake sites themselves.
No need to feel stupid ! I am glad my post has helped you. As said before, I will contact Riot again to make sure this last fan page will also be deleted.
Cheers !
Hi Bart Can you please take this page down http://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Riot-codes/363171447059745 This dude is scamming people
ReplyDeleteWebsite - www.riotcodesfree.com
Hi, Facebook appears to be a bit slow for this page, but I hope they will take it down soon.
DeleteRiot has already been notified about this page as well.
Thanks !
riotcodegenerator.com
ReplyDeletetake it down.
which facebook scam? The win a ten dollar code for life or fill out the survey and get 50,000 riot points? Both are irritating..
ReplyDeleteHere's some REAL free RP:
ReplyDeletewww.lol-rp.blogspot.com
No gimmicks, 100% real.
hey, i accidentally clicked on the link someone posted... am I in danger of any viruses or anything?
ReplyDeleteIn this case you shouldn't be in danger of any viruses.
DeleteHowever, if you like to make sure, visit one of the known Antivirus websites and use their online scan to verify your machine is clean.
Nice work
ReplyDeleteHey Bart, You are doing a good job. Keep reporting these scammers. There's another facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/League-of-Legends-Free-Riot-Points-Codes/339199109487513 Take it down as well
ReplyDeleteThanks, it will be dealt with!
DeleteHey Bart,
ReplyDeleteYour post was a great read. I went out and checked the links you provided and half of them didn't work (which is great).
I did notice one or two that aren't actually scams though, they are just people refering to reputable GPT sites and while annoying they aren't scams.
I'm seeing many of these sites move to YouTube videos to get their scams around, have you had any experience taking YouTube videos down? I want to know my reporting isn't in Vayne (see what I did there?)
Hey,
DeleteThanks for your comment. Most of the websites are offline indeed. (it seems not that many new websites are popping up lately.)
Can you provide me those sites that you think are not a scam? I'll re-check them and of course remove them if found to be "annoying but legit".
I haven't had any experience in taking down YouTube videos, but it surely doesn't hurt to report them. Mostly I don't bother since they refer to websites already reported and/or flagged. Any specific YouTube videos?
However, I Garen-tee we will be able to rid the world of these scammers if we keep reporting & flagging them! ;-)
Anysite that points to PrizeRebel or Point2Shop classifies as 'annoying but legit', these sites are definitely reputable and trustworthy get paid to (GPT) sites, nothing scam about them they have been around for years.
DeleteI've used both these sites with success (not for Riot Points but for NX Cash/Karma Koin mostly), but don't take the word of a random on the internet. A quick check of the forums/testimonials on either site will prove it pretty quickly. You come across as an intelligent person so you'll have no trouble understanding why/how they actually work. If you are really daring you can even prove they work for yourself ;)
I'm on my phone currently so I can't check all the links but I will when I get the chance (and if I remember), I do know that I saw at least 2 or maybe 3.
On YouTube I'm mostly seeing 'riot point hack' this or 'riot point generator' that. You do make a good point that most of the links are actually dead though.
I definitely want to rid the world of scammers, but I also want to try and teach people there are legit ways out there (albeit only a few) if your willing to spend some time using them (basically an impossible task to convince people). I loved getting free gaming currencies/codes during my teenage years. I tell anyone that will listen, the smart ones check it out and understand and the others scream 'scam' and don't get any benefit, doesn't bother me which option they choose, its their loss(Sorry I rambled on a bit).
It all comes back to the age old saying, "if it's too good to be true, then it probably is".
Hey,
DeleteSure, I'll await the links you think are legit, I'll double check them and of course remove them if found to be not a scam.
I have heard of the mechanism they use, but haven't tried it myself. Guess I will need to ;-).
Don't worry about rambling, you can share what you want in the comments. I think it's beneficial for one to stand critical at first before trying something new; test it, read some (real) testimonials and you're good to go.
Exactly! I repeat this many times in several of my blog posts, hoping it will catch on to "the public". That saying must be one of the best to be ever invented.
The two legit ones (which both happen to be pointing to PrizeRebel in this case) are:
Deletehttp://riotpoints4free.webs.com/
http://free-riot-points.com/
I recommend stopping by the PrizeRebel site or the forum (guests can browse it), it will prove it quickly enough. This site also gives a good overview of it: http://www.ptc-investigation.com/prizerebel.aspx
To refresh the sites above are definitely not scams, they are just trying to get referrals for PrizeRebel (as they get a bonus because its basically free advertisitng for the site).
I hope I can help clear its name (as an active member of the site).
Thanks, I'll check them out soon and post back when I do.
DeleteCheers!
Greetings,
DeleteI have verified those two websites and they do not seem to contain any scam; thus I have removed them from the list above.
Cheers!
Thanks, keep up the great work!
DeleteThanks, I'll check them out.
ReplyDeletethanks you for your work
ReplyDeleteI almost fell for this but got weary when I got these surveys. Your post reminded me ;)
ReplyDeleteThe two comments above link to Riot Point scams in their name... they should be removed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this list btw!
Taken care of, thanks!
DeleteHow do you report scam site like those to Riot ?
ReplyDeleteBest way to report these kind of scam sites would be to submit a ticket:
Deletehttps://support.leagueoflegends.com/home
i have a question , look these videos:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk-bMCveE2Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVit7mCkaSc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktf9s7ObO5c
How do they get so many visits? Sorry for my english
Hi Anonymous,
DeleteThere are several reasons why they get so many visits:
- use of bots
- people are actually looking for free RP
The comments on these videos are often bot-generated or are just multiple accounts of the scammer, ranging from "still works" and "does this still work? yes it does!"
Regards
Enjoyed this post, thanks for the info!
ReplyDeletegot here through youtube, excellent read, keep it up..
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interesting topic for this site
ReplyDeleteThis is the great article you have provided. I'm really satisfied with your kind information. Would you please take a look to
ReplyDeletethe ADP Scam Review? Then I will appreciate you and credit your website as well. Thanks in
advance.

ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
DeleteYou are completely right, as you may have read above, one of my other readers actually pointed out there's a legit way for this.
I always check out the sites I list here, but if I made a mistake, please do tell me and I will verify again and de-list if needed.
Cheers!
Facebook is very entertaining in terms of gaming and socialization, but most of all it can be useful too for business, popularity or whatever cause. Unfortunately it can also be used to scam....
ReplyDeleteYep, there are quite a lot of Facebook pages on there which promote these sites as well. You can always report those pages on Facebook.
Deleteleague-gamers site scam?
ReplyDeleteThanks, verified scam!
DeleteRiotPointsCodes.Net
ReplyDeleteIs a new one blowing up fast.
Verified scam, added to list. Thanks!
Deletethank you for this
ReplyDeleteSo much scam :D
ReplyDeletegood report,thanks man!
ReplyDeleteWhat about http://leaguerewards.net/?id=ow8ykmiwg1?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
DeleteThis is also a scam. I've added it to the list.
Thanks!
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI have verified the website and it is a scam as well - even when you get all the necessary clicks, you still need to fill in a "survey".
Verdict: scam, added to the list.
Hello dude i want you to check if tis page is scam (nearly shure)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.leaguerewards.net/de/
lg ANONYMUS
Hi Anonymous,
DeleteYes, this is also a confirmed scam site.
Regards
hello, im just reporting another christmas scam :)
ReplyDeletehttp://christmas.riotpromotions.com/
Confirmed scam. Added it to the list. Thanks!
Deleteare there any non scam things out there anymore?
ReplyDeleteProbably not. Any and all promotions will always go via the official League of Legends website (which is leagueoflegends.com).
DeleteIs it possible to counter such activity?
ReplyDeleteI suppose in a way I'm asking if there is a way to sue, or something close to it, for misleading information, or abuse of personal information?
I mean, who the heck are these people to go around making false claims?
Of course no such thing as 'free' anything is given on the internet, and there are kids who wold fall for this stuff all the time.
This is extremely infuriating.
Hi Anonymous,
Deletein theory those activities can be stopped by "parking" the domains, which means for example that Riot Games themselves buy these domains so no evilness can be done with it.
In reality, this is quite hard for any company to follow-up onto, as hundreds of those domains may be created daily.
The people behind those websites usually are out for 2 things:
- money (which they get by people filling in fake surveys)
- credentials (phishing, scam)
The best thing to do is to get people more aware of the threats that exist on the internet and are not limited to games at all.
Haha if anyone is still commentig I'd like to share an experience. So I was really desperate for RP because I wanted a new champion. So i went to the leaguerewards site. There was a live chat. It seemed super legit. But most people ignorre whatever I said. So i decided to see if there was trigger words to make them reply. Sure enough there was. I screamed FAKE. Two people immediately respond "@orio no fake! It's legit bro" or something stupid like that. Also before this, i found another site. There was a chat. This girl Lean and Maon (or something like that) were talking about how easy it is and then sfter they just stop talking. I screamed LEAAAAA. No response. Refreshed the page. Sure enough, the conversation restsrted.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA these were so funny.
Indeed, just like all the Youtube comments on those "legit" generators are also bots. Nice to see you had some fun with them!
DeleteHey, thanks for the article. I'm not sure but I'm guessing this website is also a scam?http://www.godshack.tk/
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,

hi bart what do u think about http://www.riotgenerator.com/?
ReplyDeleteAnother scam site.

and to my last comment (about riotgenerator.com). I know that these sites are fake. Also i know that u must make survey or something. But can u tell me what will happen after u will complete that survey? I dont waste my money to scam but maybe u could :DD
ReplyDeleteUsually you won't be able to skip or ever "finish" the survey, but if you do, you'll end up with a useless file anyway.
DeleteThere's no such thing as a "riot points generator". Thanks for your feedback!
Regards
http://riotsgiftcard.com/ this one too. I see the guy promoting this on youtube. He starts off with an innocent comment talking about how he needs riot points. Then he comments to himself. Then -boom- a comment about this site. Sad too see it on one of my favorite youtube gamers videos.
ReplyDeleteVerified scam, thanks!
DeleteIs this a scam as well? http://www.vix-group.com/lol/
ReplyDeleteScam indeed, added to the list.
DeleteThis is a scam too right? http://freeleaguecodes.congoloid.net/
ReplyDeleteYep, another (survey) scam. Added. Thanks!
Deletehttp://gamesbetakeys.us/league-of-legends-skins. Is this one a scam?
ReplyDeleteYep, also a survey scam.
DeleteDamn that's some dedication Bart. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Phillip, happy to help! :)
DeleteIs there any real one, if there is can you link it?
ReplyDeleteHi Joseph!
DeleteThere are no real ones I'm afraid, it's all a scam!
The exception being here if Riot Games themselves are hosting an event, of course.
