Free Riot codes scam

Below you can find a list of confirmed phishing and scam websites. In the conclusion (end of this post or click) you'll be able to find some prevention tips and what to do if your account has been hacked.

Facebook. A social networking place. For some a dream come true, for others a true nightmare. Guess in which category phishers, scammers and malware authors reside?

In today's post we will be highlighting a scam specifically focusing on players of the game League of Legends, an action real-time strategy game developed and published by Riot Games.

The scam page on Facebook in question is:
hxxp://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Riot-codes/141669939249958

Currently, it already has over 41,000 likes:

More and more people are liking the page, thus might be getting scammed

On Youtube as well as on Google+ and Twitter it is -for now- pretty calm. Only a few video's and tweets promoting this scam:

On Twitter, Google+ and Youtube they are also promoting their website, but not as heavily as on Facebook

Example websites where you can get "free" riot points  or "free" riot codes are

You can +1 it, share it on Facebook, Tweet it ... Share the scam with everyone you like ;-) .

The first link in bold is the one discussed in this blog post. All you have to do to get your Riot Points for free is to follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1 - Share it on Facebook
Step 2 - Post the following message once on your wall and 5 times on a Different Game Page on Facebook:
WOW! I just got my League of Legends Riot Code for free! So excited! Thanks hxxp://freeriotcodes.com !
Step 3 - Click "Like and Confirm"

Step 2 in the process - posting on Facebook. In this specific scam, it is not being posted automatically to your wall, you actually have to share it yourself

That's it, 3 simple steps and then you'll be able to download your Riot Points or codes free of charge!

... But wait, there's a timer on the page indicating you'll have to wait before the next giveaway:

Somehow, I got lucky and, through one of the other websites, I was able to visit the download page and acquire my points!

However, ultimately I have to complete a survey to finally download my Riot points. I am getting redirected to several other scams and so on. You can win a smartphone, the new iPad, an iPhone, trendy boots, a Macbook ....

In some cases only your phone number is sufficient, in others you'll have to fill in complete information like your full address, email address ...

Some examples of dubious file sharing websites, which are also showing a popup with some Javascript behind it (another survey scam):

    1. Hi Jake,

Thanks for your comment. However, if you have actually read the post, it is obviously a scam.

These 'survey scams' are becoming more and more prevalent. It is sufficient to simply close the page.

  3. Well, I received two codes from two different downloads on two different days and they were both the same code. Plus they didn't work. And with all those unnecessary surveys, there is no way that it can't be a scam.

  11. We're really sorry but this code was already taken by another user. This is auto message from our script.

We've generated new code for you. We guarantee that this one isn't already taken and only you can see it. You have only 60 minutes to unlock the new generated code. After 60 minutes we'll remove the link and the link will unavailable for unlock.

We're really sorry, the chances to happen something like this are 1%. You and one more user clicked on the Available code at same second.

We're really sorry. We promise that the code below will work 100%.

    Thanks for understanding.

Your code can be unlocked here: http://fileice.net/download.php?file=qdqr

You know already, the surveys are easy and take only few minutes from your time.
If you have paid surveys, complete it and then send to the same number "STOP" to get your credit back.

  20. Hey Bart,

Your post was a great read. I went out and checked the links you provided and half of them didn't work (which is great).

I did notice one or two that aren't actually scams though, they are just people refering to reputable GPT sites and while annoying they aren't scams.

I'm seeing many of these sites move to YouTube videos to get their scams around, have you had any experience taking YouTube videos down? I want to know my reporting isn't in Vayne (see what I did there?)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey,

Thanks for your comment. Most of the websites are offline indeed. (it seems not that many new websites are popping up lately.)

Can you provide me those sites that you think are not a scam? I'll re-check them and of course remove them if found to be "annoying but legit".

I haven't had any experience in taking down YouTube videos, but it surely doesn't hurt to report them. Mostly I don't bother since they refer to websites already reported and/or flagged. Any specific YouTube videos?

However, I Garen-tee we will be able to rid the world of these scammers if we keep reporting & flagging them! ;-)

      Delete
    2. Anysite that points to PrizeRebel or Point2Shop classifies as 'annoying but legit', these sites are definitely reputable and trustworthy get paid to (GPT) sites, nothing scam about them they have been around for years.

I've used both these sites with success (not for Riot Points but for NX Cash/Karma Koin mostly), but don't take the word of a random on the internet. A quick check of the forums/testimonials on either site will prove it pretty quickly. You come across as an intelligent person so you'll have no trouble understanding why/how they actually work. If you are really daring you can even prove they work for yourself ;)

I'm on my phone currently so I can't check all the links but I will when I get the chance (and if I remember), I do know that I saw at least 2 or maybe 3.

On YouTube I'm mostly seeing 'riot point hack' this or 'riot point generator' that. You do make a good point that most of the links are actually dead though.

I definitely want to rid the world of scammers, but I also want to try and teach people there are legit ways out there (albeit only a few) if your willing to spend some time using them (basically an impossible task to convince people). I loved getting free gaming currencies/codes during my teenage years. I tell anyone that will listen, the smart ones check it out and understand and the others scream 'scam' and don't get any benefit, doesn't bother me which option they choose, its their loss(Sorry I rambled on a bit).

It all comes back to the age old saying, "if it's too good to be true, then it probably is".

      Delete
    3. Hey,

Sure, I'll await the links you think are legit, I'll double check them and of course remove them if found to be not a scam.

I have heard of the mechanism they use, but haven't tried it myself. Guess I will need to ;-).

Don't worry about rambling, you can share what you want in the comments. I think it's beneficial for one to stand critical at first before trying something new; test it, read some (real) testimonials and you're good to go.

Exactly! I repeat this many times in several of my blog posts, hoping it will catch on to "the public". That saying must be one of the best to be ever invented.

      Delete
    4. The two legit ones (which both happen to be pointing to PrizeRebel in this case) are:

      http://riotpoints4free.webs.com/
      http://free-riot-points.com/

I recommend stopping by the PrizeRebel site or the forum (guests can browse it), it will prove it quickly enough. This site also gives a good overview of it: http://www.ptc-investigation.com/prizerebel.aspx

To refresh the sites above are definitely not scams, they are just trying to get referrals for PrizeRebel (as they get a bonus because its basically free advertisitng for the site).

I hope I can help clear its name (as an active member of the site).

    1. Hi Anonymous,

There are several reasons why they get so many visits:
      - use of bots
      - people are actually looking for free RP

The comments on these videos are often bot-generated or are just multiple accounts of the scammer, ranging from "still works" and "does this still work? yes it does!"

I tell anyone that will listen, the smart ones check it out and understand and the others scream 'scam' and don't get any benefit, doesn't bother me which option they choose, its their loss(Sorry I rambled on a bit).

    1. Hi Anonymous,

You are completely right, as you may have read above, one of my other readers actually pointed out there's a legit way for this.

I always check out the sites I list here, but if I made a mistake, please do tell me and I will verify again and de-list if needed.

      Cheers!

  31. Facebook is very entertaining in terms of gaming and socialization, but most of all it can be useful too for business, popularity or whatever cause. Unfortunately it can also be used to scam....

    1. Yep, there are quite a lot of Facebook pages on there which promote these sites as well. You can always report those pages on Facebook.

  37. Hi Anonymous,

I have verified the website and it is a scam as well - even when you get all the necessary clicks, you still need to fill in a "survey".

Verdict: scam, added to the list.

    1. Probably not. Any and all promotions will always go via the official League of Legends website (which is leagueoflegends.com).

  41. Is it possible to counter such activity?
I suppose in a way I'm asking if there is a way to sue, or something close to it, for misleading information, or abuse of personal information?
I mean, who the heck are these people to go around making false claims?
Of course no such thing as 'free' anything is given on the internet, and there are kids who wold fall for this stuff all the time.
    This is extremely infuriating.

    1. Hi Anonymous,

in theory those activities can be stopped by "parking" the domains, which means for example that Riot Games themselves buy these domains so no evilness can be done with it.

In reality, this is quite hard for any company to follow-up onto, as hundreds of those domains may be created daily.

The people behind those websites usually are out for 2 things:
      - money (which they get by people filling in fake surveys)
      - credentials (phishing, scam)

The best thing to do is to get people more aware of the threats that exist on the internet and are not limited to games at all.

  42. Haha if anyone is still commentig I'd like to share an experience. So I was really desperate for RP because I wanted a new champion. So i went to the leaguerewards site. There was a live chat. It seemed super legit. But most people ignorre whatever I said. So i decided to see if there was trigger words to make them reply. Sure enough there was. I screamed FAKE. Two people immediately respond "@orio no fake! It's legit bro" or something stupid like that. Also before this, i found another site. There was a chat. This girl Lean and Maon (or something like that) were talking about how easy it is and then sfter they just stop talking. I screamed LEAAAAA. No response. Refreshed the page. Sure enough, the conversation restsrted.

    HAHAHA these were so funny.

  45. and to my last comment (about riotgenerator.com). I know that these sites are fake. Also i know that u must make survey or something. But can u tell me what will happen after u will complete that survey? I dont waste my money to scam but maybe u could :DD

    ReplyDelete

    1. Usually you won't be able to skip or ever "finish" the survey, but if you do, you'll end up with a useless file anyway.

There's no such thing as a "riot points generator". Thanks for your feedback!

  46. http://riotsgiftcard.com/ this one too. I see the guy promoting this on youtube. He starts off with an innocent comment talking about how he needs riot points. Then he comments to himself. Then -boom- a comment about this site. Sad too see it on one of my favorite youtube gamers videos.
